I’m part of a rare breed - one of the few women furniture makers in the country!
As such I got into this line of work via an unusual route; with a background in sculpture I went on to train in furniture making and design first at a women’s workshop in Bristol and then Rycotewood College in Oxfordshire, (while there winning the ‘Craftswoman of the Year award’ in 1992). More recently 5 rhythms dance helped me make that final leap into self employment as a furniture maker in 2004!
I feel very lucky, in that I love the work that I do; quite simply making things seems to do me good! I am very interested in design and have a keen eye for detail and like to create furniture that is simple, stylish and functional. Working with clients to design pieces that will suit their homes as well as solve any storage problems they may have is another aspect of the work that I find very satisfying
I am based in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, with my workshop near Halifax. I spend many happy hours walking and taking photos in the beautiful countryside around here, have a look at some of these on my flickr page, flickr.com/photos/hebden-clare
